1950 - 2000
In the post-war years local Historians and
the Faversham Society researched the history of Oare Gunpowder Works
and maintained local interest in the site.
The remains of the gunpowder works were designated
as a Scheduled Ancient Monument in 1999.
From the 1950s to the 1980s Brett and Sons,
the aggregates and construction family, who now owned the site,
extracted gravel; the extended ponds we see today opposite the visitor
centre are the legacy of those days.
In 1997 Bretts leased what is now the Country
Park to Swale Borough Council, so that the area could be enjoyed
by local people, before this time the site was closed to the public.
The Council in Partnership with Groundwork
Medway Swale embarked on developing a scheme that would not only
transform the site into a heritage and nature trail with visitor
centre and class room, but also preserve and in places reconstruct
part of the works as they would of been more than 70 years ago.
This was an ambitious scheme that would require a lot of hard work
determination and funds.
