December

Red berries on holly and hawthorn and the scarlet red hips on the wild rose provide food for local and newly-arrived winter migrant thrushes. Unusual bird-calls can alert you to the presence of birds like fieldfares and redwings, whilst smaller birds like goldcrests are first noticed as fast movement along a tree branch. During the short hours of daylight most flowering plants are dormant and there is time to appreciate the silhouette of the deciduous trees and the whitish trunks of the silver birches.
