February

As the days begin to lengthen the first signs of spring appear. During warmer spells the small yellow flowers of lesser celandines gleam out of the dark soil or leaf litter. The hazel catkins move in the breeze, shaking pollen into the air. Look carefully and you will find the red female flowers close to the stem. Once fertilised these flowers develop into the familiar hazelnut. Listen for the tapping sound of the great spotted woodpecker as it searches for grubs in damaged timber or the drumming as it signals to other woodpeckers. The loud laughing call of the green woodpecker may be heard at any time of the year as it flies through the woodland.
