November

The woodland changes rapidly and, by the end of the month, most leaves have fallen off the trees. Ferns of the woodland seem to glisten in the improved light. Look at the back of their leaves to see the spores. Fruiting bodies of fungi (mushrooms and toadstools) will be found throughout the woodland and often on the open grassy areas. The dead and dying timber provides nutrients for fungi and, if you look carefully at fallen timber, you should see their fine strands of hyphae infiltrating the wood. Fallen leaves and old plant material also support hyphae and fruiting bodies.
